Green energy investments – The US deep South set to be the leader in the new green economy

The Recovery Act is the most ambitious energy legislation ever to be drawn up in the history of the US. It has converted the Energy Department into the largest venture-capital fund in the world. It is a monumental effort to derive something good from the crisis, by making green energy, green transportation and green building real. As a result of the act, no less than billion has been spent on green investments, including on a smart grid, electric cars, cleaner coal, solar, wind and geothermal power, and biofuels. The number of smart electric meters in private homes will triple, and the number of hybrids in the federal fleet will quadruple. billion is being spent to weatherize homes, and this part of the stimulus program has got a lot of attention. All in all, the Recovery Act represents the first major steps taken by the US to a low-carbon economy, and marks the beginning of the green revolution in the US. <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”/popular-affordable-green-investment/”>For further information on green invesments, click here</a>

Investment in green companies is now deeply rooted in government policy. The green industrial revolution includes companies such as A123 Systems. It was founded in 2001 on a 0,000 federal grant, and now is a global player in the all important lithium battery market. Recently, it won 9 million to construct two factories in Michigan. The batteries produced will supply the first generation of mass-market produced electric cars. Three of the world’s first electric-car plants are also being heavily financed too. Fisker Automotive has received a 9 million loan to reopen a General Motors factory in Delaware in order to manufacture battery powered sedans.

The Recovery Act’s focus on green investments will not only reduce our heavy and ongoing dependence on fossil fuels, but also avoid a future economy in which the US is dependent on other countries for manufacturing and technology. Last year, only two factories in the U.S. produced batteries for electric vehicles. Thirty new ones are now expected to be opened, which will lead to an expansion of U.S. production capacity from the current 1.5% of the global market to more than 20%.

The stimulus includes nearly .5 billion for clean-coal projects, as well as lucrative loan guarantees for US nuclear plants. The country’s largest photovoltaic solar plant is being supported by the stimulus, as well as what are set to become the world’s two largest solar thermal plants, located in California and Arizona.

The stimulus cash has fuelled green investments, after a crises induced freeze, and the US should double its share of renewable power by 2012, an aim which Obama has repeatedly stated.

This is just a quick snapshot of the many ways that funds from the Recovery act are helping fuel the green revolution in the US. The big question now is, will green investments in the country continue to rise after the terms of the Recovery Act end? Let’s hope for more positive news in the future.

Nano-materials technology lead to the printing plate industry green revolution – Nano, printing – silk screen printing industry

Museum of Shanghai World Expo in Beijing, a representative of the nano-material technology, green plate rotating cube is one of 12 pieces. It is understood that this will be our Print Industry, new nano-materials development, green plate-making technology abandon the traditional idea of Photographic Imaging, to shorten the plate making process completely pollution-free environment. “Compared with the existing technology, the technology can reduce the cost of the printing plate more than half.” Inventor, researcher at the CAS Institute of Chemistry, Song Yanlin said. Obvious because of the combined advantages of the technology investment by the government departments and agencies of the recognition set foot on the road of industrialization. To the printing industry “defections”
Printing is one of the four great inventions in ancient China, but a long time, the development of printing technology in China lags behind the world advanced level. 80s of last century, Wang Xuan, Chinese Academy of Sciences research and development of laser typesetting system to promote the cause of modern printing technology, a revolution in progress for the industry and made important contributions to national economic development. As an important influence on China’s economy one of the industries, the printing industry in China with independent intellectual property rights of advanced printing technologies to the urgent needs?? Nano-materials technology green plate shoulder this mission. Unexpected, this technology is not printing the field of technical experts from the invention, but by engaging in chemical and nano-materials scientists?? Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Chemistry, Song Yanlin new materials laboratory director and his team proposed and implemented . “Earliest nano-materials research, not for print.” Song Yanlin, said he in a chance in dealing with the printing process, understand the process of plate making and printing photographic film similar principle: a good version after laser emission Scan the film, the film after exposure, developing and fixing, are negative, and then after exposure, development and washing, get plates. “Here we have photographic imaging process, from the perspective of digital information, can simplify?” Song Yanlin researchers to start thinking about the sensitive. He later learned that the international community have a computer to plate technology (CTP), even if the most advanced printing technology, but also light-sensitive pre-coating and chemical treatment process, and the core technology has been monopolized by foreign enterprises, equipment and Consumables Expensive and prohibitive to most businesses in China. Song Yanlin in the eyes of the entire printing process, printing plates showing areas (pro-ink) and non-print area (hydrophilic, non-pro ink) the nature of two opposing areas. Perspective from the information stored can be converted into binary “0″, “1″ language means that hydrophilic areas 0, 1 or pro-oil. “In this way, the printing problem is converted into chemical and materials problems, we can use this professional approach to deal with.” He said. To achieve high-precision printing, graphic area must form a clear and non-graphic interface area, lipophilic and hydrophilic interfaces have enough contrast, that is, ultra-graphic area lipophilic (hydrophobic), non-graphic District super hydrophilic (thinning oil). Song Yanlin and his team through to the plate surface of nano-structured materials handling, not only can achieve super-hydrophilic plates, and can effectively control the infiltration of graphic region, to achieve its super-hydrophilic to super-pro-from oil changes graphic area and to avoid non-graphic areas caused by insufficient contrast between the paste version of the phenomenon. Order to ensure the printing plate’s resistance forces, need graphic area of sufficient strong rubbing. Song Yanlin and his team by Transfer Nanoparticles composite materials to improve the graphics area of friction (anti-Indian) sexual. “15″ period, Song Yanlin also bear the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 Program) project “Nanoparticles and Applications”, developed color print materials, its main performance than the products of foreign well-known companies, to be able to get the plate to ensure the fine graphic area. Is above the accumulation of basic research, Song Yanlin and his team made the green plate nano-materials technology, will transfer a special nano-composite materials, precision printing directly to the plate in the super-hydrophilic, through the interfacial properties of nano-scale regulation of the print area and the formation of non-print area with the opposite invasive (Super lipophilic / hydrophilic) of the micro-area (Photo District and non-graphic area), to achieve-to-plate printing. Currently used light-sensitive imaging plate making and printing process, from the version of the production, transportation, use, need dark operation. Nanomaterials green photosensitive imaging plate technology has abandoned the idea, omitted the darkroom and exposure, development, washing and other complicated process, whereby the printing industry, “throwing the bums out.” In addition, the technology abandoned chemical photographic process, thereby eliminating the need for chemical cleaning process, will not cause chemical pollution and waste of resources Environmental protection Obvious advantages. Concerned about changes in business innovation process management to find new ideas?? Command of the 2010 special screen printing industry of China Development Forum “Zhen Xing Cup” 2009 China Top Ten selection screen printing special awards ceremony More exciting, please see>>

How Green Cleaning Teams Can Clean Your Home Using Only Natural Products

With fears rising over the harmful effects of chemicals found in household sprays and cleaning products, green cleaning services and techniques are becoming increasingly popular in homes throughout the country.

It is well known that green cleaning companies do not use harmful air fresheners or chemical based sprays. But what are some of the natural products that green cleaning companies use when tackling household dirt and grime, and for what purpose are they best used?

A Clean Kitchen Using Only Lemons

Lemon juice is famous for its natural cleaning powers and has for many decades been a reliable cleaning product. Many local green cleaning companies use it throughout the kitchen, as it is a natural bleaching agent and an effective disinfectant. Kitchen taps, oven hops and work surfaces all some up clean and fresh once cleaned with lemon juice and a touch of water. What’s more, a lemon is a lot cheaper than a kitchen spray.

Professional green cleaners will be able to get even the most dirty kitchen area looking and feeling fresh with just a few dabs of lemon juice here and there.

Sparkling and Fresh Toilets and Ovens Thanks to Some Vinegar

Vinegar, due to its acidity, is a great all round cleaner that effectively kills germs and bacteria around the home. Most commonly, green cleaning teams will use it to remove stains from the toilet bowl by pouring it into the toilet, leaving it overnight and then flushing in the morning. It is also effective at cleaning ovens, microwaves and removing tea and coffee stains on mugs and cups.

Newspaper Cleaned Mirrors and Windows

It is not an old wives’ tale. Newspaper mixed with a splash of water and vinegar will get any shiny surface sparkling. Not only will cleaning mirrors and windows with this method save on buying harmful sprays, but it is a great way of using old newspapers in an environmentally friendly way before they are recycled.

These natural products are many green cleaning companies’ secret weapons. Expert cleaners use these everyday products and combine them with a range of techniques to make your home a spray and bleach free zone that is hygienic and fresh smelling all year round.

Wood Floor Cleaning Product Tips

How many times have you entered a store searching for the perfect wood floor cleaning product and once you arrived at the proper aisle, you were floored to see the vast selection of products on the market for cleaning your wood floors? Which should you pick, the cheap one, the expensive one? Who knows?

The Evolving Wood Floor

Wood flooring was made popular a long, long time ago. Around the turn of the century wood flooring was just about the only type of flooring found in homes. There is nothing better than to purchase an older home, rip up the carpeting, and only hope that beautiful natural wood floors are beneath it. So many consumers are searching for that perfect wood flooring, whether it is a natural wood, or laminate wood flooring.

What to Avoid When Cleaning a Wood Floore

The secret to a beautiful, wood floor is never, ever use water on the floor. If water is spilled it should be wiped up immediately to prevent damage to your wood floor. There are hundreds of wood floor cleaning products. Your job is to read the label. Find out what’s in that product. Most wood floors have a finish on them, usually a urethane coating. Never use a wax or waxed based product on your wood floor. You can use a cleaner/polisher to enhance the finish of your wood flooring. Using a polishing mop with a soft material such as terry cloth is recommended to ensure a polished look to your wood floors.

Taking Preventative Measures

Of course the first step in floor care is preventative maintenance. To maintain your wood floor’s natural beauty and finish you should use carpet rugs in high traffic areas and around sinks. These rugs will need to be vacuumed often, so that dirt does not collect beneath them onto your wood floors. High heals should not be worn on wood floors as they could potentially dent them. Keeping your pets nails trimmed will also result in less scratching. Along with this, never slide furniture across your wood floors when moving your furniture around. Place a carpet rug underneath the legs of the furniture before moving. It is also recommended to place protector pads underneath legs of all furniture.

The best preventative maintenance is to keep your floors clean of debris. Whether you sweep, dust or vacuum your wood floors, keeping them dirt free is the key. Using a soft duster is one of the best options for keeping a wood floor clean. Dust mops are perfect for pet hair, lint and dust and should be used daily on your wood floors, along with a gentle cleaning product that will clean your floor as you dust. A clean floor leads to a happy home owner. Keep the overall beauty of your wood floors by taking the time to find out exactly what it is you are putting on those beautiful wood floors.

Natural Cleaning Products Have The Floor

Floors come in three basic varieties: soft (i.e. carpet), hard (tile, lino, flags, marble) and wooden (self-explanatory). And you can clean all types of floors using natural <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.carpetfirst.co.uk/london_hardfloor_cleaning/woodfloor_hardfloor_polishing.html” title=”Floor Cleaning”>floor cleaning</a> methods.

As an everyday measure, the natural cleaning products you will be using for your floors will be the broom and the vacuum cleaner. Or just the vacuum cleaner – these can usually handle soft, hard and wooden surfaces with equal panache. Some can even handle wet stuff. (Never, ever vacuum up vomit or cat’s pee.

You will never get rid of the stink inside the vacuum cleaner.) And they are a natural cleaning product – all they use is air. But this “natural floor cleaner” can have the low-toxin effect ruin if you use one of those ghastly room scents that work by shaking smelly stuff on the floor and then vacuuming it up. These shake-on thingies are one of the worst sources of toxins in the home. If you want a nice smell dispersed through your home, all you need is a few drops of essential oil on the filter or on the vacuum cleaner bag. And to keep things natural with your vacuum cleaner from start to finish, remember to empty your vacuum cleaner into the compost heap instead of the rubbish bin.

However, sometimes floors need a bit more cleaning. Somebody spills a glass of wine. Someone runs through from the garden to pick up the phone without removing their muddy shoes. A child (or an adult) throws up. The new puppy pees behind the sofa.

Now what do you do?

What you will do is to act straight away, because the longer the stain sits, the worse things will get. With all three situations, the hard floor will be better off, as it is more stain resistant. Things can get a bit trickier with the more absorbent wooden and soft floors.

For all of the messes described above on a hard floor, remove the worst with the help of a ratty towel (we should all keep ratty towels for this sort of situation rather than throwing them out and having to use a good towel for a grubby job). Then get out some warm water, some soap gel and a mop (or else a scrubbing brush). Alternatively, use an Enjo mop. And remove the rest of the ick.

For cleaning a wooden floor, the aforementioned ratty towel should be thrown over the pee, the vomit or the wine to absorb the worst. The mud can simply be sponged off with a damp cloth without much trouble. The real problem with the pee, vomit and wine is that they can damage the finish of the wood floor. Do not panic. This means that you can get after the mess with vinegar, which, in ordinary circumstances, can strip off the wax from wooden floors. Dilute the vinegar with a bit of warm water and sponge it all over the spill. Leave it to sit for a bit, then douse the spot with more water and sponge up the excess. You will need to rewax the spot on the floor, but it is possible to make your own natural floor wax by mixing two parts of beeswax with one part of linseed oil (and, if you must, four parts of turpentine) in a double boiler until well combined. Some lemon or cedar essential oil won’t hurt here, either. Apply the wax with one old sock and buff with another sock.

For carpets, the best thing to do to get rid of the pee, the vomit or the wine is first to blot up as much as you can as fast as you can, and then to douse it liberally with large amounts of water. This floats up a lot of the stains. In many cases, this will do the trick, but to stop smells (vital in the case of puppy pee), sprinkle on some baking soda and leave to dry before vacuuming up. If the stain won’t come up with this, you’ll have to use the method you use for getting up the mud. Get a bit of warm water and some soap, plus a soft scrubbing brush. Scrub the spot up to a foam and blot the foam off with that handy towel. The spot will look a little ruffled for a few days, but after a week or two, it will get trodden smooth again and you won’t be able to find the place unless you really search for it.

Natural Cleaning Products For Your Kitchen

Cleaning the kitchen using natural <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.carpetfirst.co.uk” title=”House Cleaning”>house cleaning</a> products may feel a bit like walking a tightrope. On the one hand, as you are preparing food, it is extremely important that surfaces, etc. are kept scrupulously clean. On the other hand, you want to minimize the amount of toxins you use â?? after all, you don’t want to eat toxins, after all.

Actually, it’s not that hard. Many of the products you use in your cooking already are also good at keeping things clean and killing germs. And you don’t need to worry about toxins, as you are going to eat the “cleaners” anyway â?? well, the majority of them. The only one you won’t eat is good old soap.

* Spills, etc. on the top of the oven clean up very easily if you get onto them as soon as possible. A fresh spill will wipe away with no need for anything fancier than a dishcloth. The longer you leave a spill or stain, the harder it will be to get off, as it becomes baked on. Of course, use common sense. If a saucepan boils over onto a hot stove, don’t go poking around with a cotton cloth unless you want to start a fire and/or get burned. Wait until the oven is cool enough to touch and use a bit of water on the cloth.

* Keep a little dish of baking soda in the refrigerator to absorb smells. Replace fortnightly with fresh baking soda (hint: use the old baking soda to clean the refrigerator instead of just throwing it away).

* Boiling water is the easiest and most effective way to sterilize anything that needs it, such as items that have been used for cutting raw meat (especially chopping or cutting boards) and baby bottles. Baby bottles should be boiled for 10 minutes to make sure of all germs, but just pouring the boiling water over a chopping board or knife will be enough. Some doctors recommend that if a stomach bug is going around the family, pouring boiling water over the cutlery and leaving it to soak for a few minutes before doing the dishes is a good way to stop the bug spreading.

* Baking soda mixed with water cuts through grease just as efficiently as any commercial chemical cleaner. In fact, some <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.anyclean.co.uk” title=”Commercial Cleaning”>commercial cleaning</a> products proudly state that they contain “added baking soda”. Save pennies and reduce the amount of toxins by just using the baking soda. Baking soda is suitable for most surfaces. It will even clean the inside of the oven.

* If your microwave oven smells a bit stale, put a small bowl of water with half a lemon or a splash of vinegar (or a bowl of straight vinegar) inside it and microwave it on high for a few minutes until it boils. This will banish the smell of last night’s curry and will make burnt-on ick easier to get off.

* Baking soda and water left to sit inside teacups and teapots gets rid of those ugly brown tea and coffee stains. Add a bit of vinegar for extra oomph to get rid of really tough stains.

Alternatively, buy coloured mugs and cups in dark colours that don’t show the stains. After all, the stain won’t hurt you, and you could save yourself a bit of time. Black chinaware looks particularly stunning.

* Save crushed eggshells to clean out those awkward glass decanters. Mix with warm water and a bit of baking soda and swirl around and around. Leave overnight, swirl again then tip the eggshells out (hint: pour them over the garden rather than down the sink â?? they keep slugs and snails at bay). Rinse out any residue by swirling vinegar in the decanter.

* Water is the universal solvent. Instead of scrubbing endlessly at stuck-on residues of mashed potato, porridge or white sauce, fill the saucepan with water and leave it to soak overnight. Most of the old gunk will have almost floated off the bottom and sides of the pan.

Â

* Strong-smelling herbs stored in dry goods helps to repel silverfish and ants, etc. Bayleaves are best, as some of the smell will enter the products in question, and a bit of bay flavour won’t hurt your rice, flour or beans, whereas lavender or peppermint may be a bit of an odd flavour in, say, a stew… unless you want to experiment.

ã??

In the last decade according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation global food prices have risen by an average of 83% overall.

That’s just one statistic from this week’s crop of news reports on climate change, global warming and food production.

Here’s another: global greenhouse gas emissions since the 1850s would have been a third greater without the 1960s Green Revolution, according to the researchers in the US.

Neither of these findings is likely to bring much comfort to the millions of people currently struggling with the effects of this year’s unprecedented rainfall in Pakistan and China, which has displaced at least 20 million people in the two countries, flooded out of their homes, their work and all they own, including crops, seeds and livestock.

Nor will it be of comfort to the Russians, facing their hottest ever summer, with wild fires circling Moscow and risking the loss of at least a third, possibly more, of the country’s wheat crop – due for harvest in September and October but already triggering price speculation on the commodities markets because Russia is the world’s third largest supplier of wheat.

In addition 16 countries have recorded record temperatures this year (2010) and there are severe droughts, leading to starvation in Niger and parts of the Sahel region of Africa.

At the same time US researchers have also found that rice yields are declining in the six main Asian rice producing countries, which they ascribe to global warming and the resulting rise in night-time temperatures. Yields have dropped between 10% and 20% over the last 25 years in some places.

In the face of all this it is hard to tolerate the persistent wrangling between countries in the ongoing discussions ahead of the next meeting in Cancun, Mexico, due in November. Following the disappointing outcome of the last summit in Copenhagen, it’s now being said that the talks have in fact gone backwards.

Even without the mounting evidence of the devastating effects of climate change on weather patterns, and by extension agricultural production, a vast increase in food production is going to be needed to supply the projected global population growth and make some inroads into the scandal that a billion people on the planet are malnourished if not starving.

So what happened in the last “green” revolution and what chance is there of another one?

The 1960s green revolution increased crop yields and cut hunger dramatically in places like South Asia and Latin America by putting more land into cultivation and by using higher yielding varieties of rice, maize and other crops. The result for India, for example, was transformation from a food importer in need of emergency help from time to time to a major food exporter.

To feed the increasingly populous world at current levels would have needed twice as much land as is currently used, according to the US researchers. The green revolution used a combination of intensive farming techniques and chemical fertilisers as well as the higher-yield varieties to avoid that.

However, as we now know, there were longer term implications to this method of farming – in the effects of chemical fertilisers on the soil, the environment, insects, plants, animals and sometimes human health.

Lessons have been learned and at least the language has changed. The talk now is all about sustainable farming, natural, healthier foods and a new range of low-chem agricultural products, including biopesticides, biofungicides and yield enhancers, coming from the Biopesticides Researchers that do less harm to the land.

These low-chem products are only part of the mix. There is also the technique of genetic modification although there are many people who are very wary of the unknown pandora’s box this might open.

Changing diet patterns towards eating more meat as the BRIC countries become more prosperous and develop a larger, urban middle class are another factor. Meat production is widely seen as an inefficient use of land and water so, while it would have an effect on greenhouse gas emissions, persuading people to eat less of it might be a tall order in some parts of the world.

Clearly there’s not much more land available for agriculture to expand, even without the production of biofuels. Increasingly extreme weather won’t help.

In addition therefore reaching global agreement on efforts to curb emissions in a way that is accepted as fair by all countries is another key to achieving some kind of sense on global warming, climate change and food production. It’s to be hoped that the pessimistic predictions for Mexico in November prove not to be true, since all our futures depend on it.

If the planet and its people are to survive the summer’s increasingly extreme weather in many countries is a wake-up call that we need another “green revolution”, but this time not only in food production and sustainable farming but also on climate change, says consumer journalist Ali Withers

Natural Resources Mozambique

              Natural Resources in Mozambique

Mozambique is on the Eastern part of South Africa and has considerable amount of natural resources, of which major part is yet to be explored including coal, Gold, titanium, bauxite etc. The exploration and export of natural resources positively contributes to the poverty reduction and economic growth of the country. Natural resources are the gift to the country given by the nature and can be divided into renewable and non renewable resources. The principal natural resources of Mozambique are coal, Gold, iron ore, titanium, tantalum etc. Mozambique is blessed with abundance of natural resources; in fact there is no deficiency in Mozambique natural resources. Thus, natural resources help in boosting up the economy of Mozambique. In Mozambique dependence on forest resources is high because almost 70% of Mozambique is covered in forest. Approximately 80% of the total population lives in the rural areas where poverty detected is 54%. Natural resources can generate economic dynamics and a flow of income can help the Mozambique Government in fighting the poverty and stimulate economic growth.

Natural Resources Laws in Mozambique

Mining & Exploration activities in Mozambique contributes only 2% to GDP and thus the Mozambique’s rich mineral deposits remain largely undeveloped. The Mozambican Government is firmly committed to encourage foreign investment for developing Mozambique’s fledging mining industry. Recently, a new mining and geological policy has been implemented with the existing legislation, which is likely to improve the country’s competitive position in the region. All applications for exploration and mining rights have to be addressed to the Minister of Mineral resources and Energy for processing by the National Directorate of Mines.

Coal Sector in Mozambique

Mozambique is already exporting coal from Matola Coal Terminal at Maputo. Mozambique also exports coal to the neighboring state of Malawi, but the Government expects export on a large scale in the coming years. The growing mining sector in Mozambique is a source of export income and also creates a large number of well paid jobs. Many Mozambicans have worked in South African Mines and so they have plenty of mining sector experience in that region. Apart from export, coal can be used for domestic industries and thermal power plants. The new coal mine in Tete Province of Mozambique is a reflection of the government’s policy of using mineral wealth as a lever to eradicate poverty from Mozambique. The rights to the Mozambique coal mines have been given to multinational companies at a rapid rate in recent years. 36,742 tons of coal production was expected in Mozambique in 2003 comparing 43,512 tons in 2002. Mozambique has substantial coal deposits situated in the Moatize and Mucanha – Vuzi coal basins in the Tete province. The basin contains seven coal seams and has reserves estimated at 750 Mt. The Mucanha – Vuzi basin is said to contain as much as 3 600 Mt coal reserves. Coal production from Moatize reached a peak in the early 1980’s at 5,00,000 tons per year. Mozambique has recently announced plans to export 2Mt of coal to Nigeria annually. These studies reveal that Mozambique is emerging as a great potential source of thermal and coking coal. Rachana Global is a mining company and has successfully acquired license in the areas of Tete and Mutara provinces of Mozambique. The company is focused on growth through investment in suitable Mozambique mining opportunities and thus planning to develop itself as a diversified mining house in the years to come. According to Mr. Manoj Sompura, the Promoter & Managing Director of Rachana Global, the group is successfully involved in the coal mining process in Mozambique. It has identified sources of exploring and mining coal in various areas of Mozambique such as Minjova basin, Zambezie basin and few more. Our mining company is well equipped with state-of-the-art facility for finding new avenues for mineral mining & exploration in various parts of the world.

The Green Cucumber

by: Mary Beth Byerly

I have always been interested in writing an article entitled “The Green Cucumber”. Yes, I know put the cart before the horse, but that is exactly what happened. Of course I had different intentions on the body of the piece, but it seems to fit right into the recent and future state of our economy. I am also designing a website with the same name for purposes involving an Eco-friendly or “Green” environment.

Lately I have had some “green” encounters. No they are not “green” encounters of the third kind, but most of them are a bit freaky. I would have to say the information that I have, came to me in the form of dreams. I won’t bore you with all of them but I will tell you my two favorites; in the first one I dream that I wake up and everything, I mean everything is green. The sun, the moon,(give me a break it is a dream) the people. Everywhere you look was a sea of green. I interpret this as God sending me a message to change. Second (my favorite) has sort of the same concept. I dream that I wake up and everything is white, which I connect with purity, and I am green. I see this as everyone on earth has made an effort to change their lives and help in some way, but I represent the activists and am quite overbearing at times. The reason I say this is because some environmentalists are only about the cause. We all want the same ending, but need to do it in our own way. Most of us are striving to get to the same solution. “Rome wasn’t built in a day”!

I have come face to face and opened my eyes to the Eco-friendly revolution, for lack of a better word, that is going on all around us. This affects all walks of life, all industries from farmers to large corporations; what we eat, what we build, how we do most of the things that we are programed to do and most of all how to deprogram most of us from our comfy lifestyles and get involved. You can still have your comfort, but do it in a way as not to hurt the environment. The couch you are sitting on should be made of Eco-friendly materials and the television you are watching should be a HD energy efficient tube. The reason I used that example is because my husband and I are couch potatoes. As soon as dinner is prepared and eaten and the dishes are put in our energy efficient dish washer, we go directly to the living room and turn on the tube. This is our relaxation time and we deserve it after a long day of work. Other people may have a different way to relax, but it all comes down to the same thing, trying to change what you do to help the environment.

Watch the things that you eat. I have researched Eco-friendly foods, and still don’t know how to interpret them. I found a website called “EcoFriendly Foods”. If you are interested, browse this site. On the left hand side under the “about” section are 50 or more restaurants that only serve, what else, EcoFriendly Foods. I only checked out a few, but the restaurants that I did review have complete menus from appetizers to desserts. Some of the entree’s sound delicious, but I have yet to figure out how to read them. Some of them have great names, but I can not understand if it is actually the food itself or a combination of “green” ingredients mixed up to make people think they are eating, lets say a hamburger.

Let’s talk about cars. Most of our population can not afford to buy a new car right now. The state of our economy is horrendous. We have less jobs and more responsibilities According to KBB (Kelley Blue Book)”it’s hard to know whether it makes sense to trade-in your current car for something more fuel efficient”. I entered my information on my vehicle and my trade-in value was a little more than 00.00. So my dilemma, as well as most peoples’, I have no car payments right now and I can only get so much for my vehicle. What to do? Of course everyone, including myself will keep their vehicle. The only thing to remember is when you do go out to buy that new car, check out the hybrids. If that is not for you, find a car that is made by a manufacturer who is most compliant to the Eco-friendly world. They are all doing it. Every new car that is being assembled has to rise above the standards that is expected of them. Pretty soon we will not have a choice. We must go green when buying that new automobile.

For anyone who does not know, a hybrid car is a vehicle that uses a rechargeable energy system and a normal gasoline fueled power source. They are low polluting and consume less gasoline than cars with pure internal combustion engines.

They say water is the gasoline of the future. Although water plays a big part of the green revolution, I highly doubt that it can replace gasoline entirely. The human body needs water to survive and it could be the top resource to help heal our planetary situation. An inventor, who wants to remain anonymous, believes that a 100% water car can be built. But there is no proof of this. He does have a car running on 93% water and 7% gasoline. That is a great accomplishment, considering what is going on now with the manufacturers of an Eco-friendly automobile. They are nowhere near having that feather in their cap.

“GBB-The Green Business Bureau is quickly becoming the standard for green businesses certification and accountability”. Not every business can be perfectly green, but every business can start. Small businesses can not compete with large corporations, but there are things that you can do to help. When you run out of copy or printer paper, buy recycled paper. For ink-jet printers, you can recycle the cartridges. Most office supply stores will give back money when you bring your empty cartridges back to the store. For your laser printer, you can recycle the toner cartridge.

I have a page on my site called Good Life Bottles. All they sell is bottles. They make a high quality food grade stainless steel BPA free as well as toxin free hot or cold beverage bottle with a vacuum sealed cap. They are a friendly alternative to plastic bottles and are lightweight, reusable and 100% recyclable. The bottles come in two sizes 500ml and 1000ml. It is a great alternative for plastic.

A Green Job or also called a Green Collar Job is a job that contributes substantially to preserving or restoring environmental quality. It could be in agriculture, research and development, administrative or any other jobs that are specific to protect ecosystems and biodiversity.

As part of their curriculum, schools should teach their students at an early age, about the environment. They should learn how to be a healthy and responsible adult by using resources wisely.

Do you recycle? If you are responsible person you probably do, but not enough. Years ago no one would dare throw away an empty jelly jar. They would usually reuse it as a drinking glass or a container of some sort. We need to get away from the throw-away society and recycle that empty jelly jar. Beer comes in glass bottles, why can’t water? We don’t need to spend a lot of money in order to go green. My thought is, it should be mandatory to recycle and use recycled materials. The city I live in makes the community recycle glass, plastic and newspapers. I think most cities and small towns do the same.

Have you ever noticed those windmill looking things that are right smack in the middle of nowhere? Riding in your car and bingo, there they are. Those are alternate sources of energy. Their real name is wind turbines (pretty close), and there is a demand for clean power to meet the world’s growing energy needs. The wind turbines are the answer. They are highly efficient and meet energy needs and environmental awareness for now and in the future.

You can help by

shutting down and unplugging electronics when not in use

washing your clothes in cold water

filling your bottle with filtered tap water

updating your wardrobe

exchanging CDs, DVDs and books instead of buying

using refurbished electronics

using kitchenware products made of recycled materials

Attention to green is here. Most of us are too busy and need to be reminded. But most of all we need to annoy all of the people who don’t find it necessary to change.

I could go on and on about subjects that I did not address in this article. The fact of the matter is we are at war and have to change our ways for the better so our children and our childcare’s children can live in an environment that is toxin free.

The “Green” revolution is NOT going to away, it is here to stay.
