Grow: An Environmentally Friendly Book

Author Alyson Beaton and illustrator K. J. Bradley created Grow to take a child (2 to 5 years of age) through a typical day, implementing a “normal” routine that is environmentally and socially sound. The sharply designed book helps parents teach children very early on how easy it is to take steps for a cleaner earth. The text focuses on words like “share” and “grow” to instill basic social concepts that resound in larger impacts, and the images encourage the child to actively participate in the daily routine and timeline that follows along the bottom of the pages. Grow was based on the idea that as a child’s vocabulary develops, he or she makes connections to specific items. For example, if a child associates the word “coffee” with “Starbucks” the word “Starbucks” will likely be an association for life. Grow hopes to instill brandless, positive routines that can benefit community, health, and an awareness of self that’s connected to the larger world.

Your Green Home: A Guide to Planning a Healthy, Environmentally Friendly New Home Reviews

Review by K A N:

The text is well-written and can appeal to a wide audience. It’s simple enough to understand for those without a great deal of knowledge in sustainable design, yet interesting and usefull enough for the professional who’s more trained in sustainability. The text covers sustainable homes in a logical order, first stressing the foundation concepts like siting, orientation, passive solar, and building envelope efficiency, BEFORE moving on to less critical (but more popular) topics such as green materials.

I am a professor of Environmental Design and am currently building a passive solar, zero-energy home, and if I were to write a text that comprises the whole of the process and goals in sustainable home building, the format and breadth of topics would be similar to this book.

One negative of the book is the absence of color images to illustrate some points. The simple line drawings get the point across, but photos might have a better impact – especailly in sections discussing more advanced systems such as renewable energy systems or rainwater catchment systems.

Review by D. Beideck:

This book was a overview/introduction to building a green home. Should be a must read for builders and anyone planning on building a new home. Not all strategies will work for every situation, but there’s lots here that would apply for any situation or budget.

Wonderworld Peek-a-boo Ball Reviews

Review by Tymon S. Eades:

This is a nice toy, and my little girl likes it, but this is about the size of a tennis ball. I was thinking it would be a lot larger.

Review by Val:

This is smaller then expected, only about 3″ diameter. Not that the smaller size is a bad thing. It makes it easier to store or travel with. It is a cool old school toy, but the pegs only come out with gravity or centrifical force. So it’s only really fun to watch while it is rolling. My son hasn’t played with it much, but I think it’s fun. Maybe he’ll get more into is as he gets a bit older. In the mean time I like that it makes very little noise and doesn’t require batteries.

Augusta and Elliott (An Environmentally Friendly Book for Children) Reviews

Review by Kimberly J. Allen:

This book, which features coloring pages (always a plus for kids!) is a sweet way to bring awareness to our environmental impact on the oceans. Growing up, I had the distinct pleasure of spending time with Amos Morrill, and I am so honored to have done so. His love for the Caribbean and his passion for beauty and nature taught me to appreciate the outdoors.

Thanks Amos!

The Green Parent: A Kid-Friendly Guide to Environmentally-Friendly Living Reviews

Review by James Krackow:

The Green Parent is an essential read for all parents and parents-to-be who endeavor to find ways to improve energy efficiency even as their family continues to grow. It offers a wide range of tips and suggestions that cover every aspect of life while raising children. Taking just a few of these and incorporating them into the daily routine can easily help your family save money as well as reduce waste. Most importantly, there are fun and creative ways to involve children in the effort so that the lessons of protecting the environment are taught early and often allowing parents to set the example and educate in ways kids can appreciate. If (like me) you ever thought having children made going green too difficult or challenging, The Green Parent will convince you otherwise. – J.K., father of two

Review by W. Jeffrey Lockwood:

The Green Parent is a very valuable resource for any parent that even remotely cares about raising a family with an eye towards sustainability and environmental responsibility. Aside from the fundamental purpose of the book, the Green Parent is a great book for a few reasons. For starters, the book is well researched. There’s no fluff. Secondly, it’s a very practical book. And that’s probably its greatest benefit. The ideas Jenn presents are easy to digest…there’s no pontification and you won’t feel guilty after reading it. Her wise use of bullet points, light narrative and to-the-point suggestions are a breath of fresh air…pun intended. The Green Parent is a good read on its own, and it has staying power in that you’ll be coming back to it as a reference again and again.

The Cardboard Boat Book

A step-by-step instruction manual on how to build a lightweight ‘environmentally-friendly’ boat from recyclable resources. The boats simply fold up from ¼” thick cardboard obtaining their strength from the geometry of the component parts. The boats are 8-feet long, weigh about 25-pounds, and can accommodate a 250-pound person without risking structural damage. Each boat is constructed with 21-pieces of cardboard that are used to make 7-component parts. The 7 parts are assembled together with ‘environmentally-friendly’ contact cement and paper drywall tape. Once assembled the boats are sealed with an ‘environmentally-friendly’ water-based waterproof coating. No special tools are required and they are very simple to build. All of the materials used to build a boat are typically found at ‘do-it-yourself’ home improvement stores. The boats can be outfitted with 12-volt electric fishing motors, although they are typically propelled with traditional Kayak style paddles.

The Cardboard Boat Book Reviews

Review by S. Adsit:

I Got the Cardboard boat book a few months ago. Built the boat with 6 year old son. We had a lot of fun building it. It attracted a lot of attention outside in the driveway, and a few times we ended up with a small party of neighbors hanging out, talking, helping, and having fun. It was Awesome. After waiting two months for a day without Snow or rain, I got it in the lake. Floats like a dream. We spent over two hours floating around and exploring the areas we cant get to by land. Not a hint of water damage afterwords. My son had plenty of room up front, and I was more than comfortable in back. The boat is very sturdy. Resists tipping more than a plastic Kayak too. So I give the book a thumbs up. It delivers a great product and a lot of fun on the way. The end result is cool, but its the getting there, the “building” that is the best. My son is very proud of our accomplishment.

So I bet people are thinking, “Do I really need to buy the book, cant I just make one on my own?”….. Buy the book. This is a serious boat. It will work, and it will last a lifetime. I could not have done it without the book. You will understand how well engineered the plans are once you make it.

Review by Connie R. Montgomery:

I am aware of this boat and the book and I must say that what I have seen is amazing. Not only is the book very readable, the instructions are clear and concise with a combination of diagrams and pictures, making it truly a DIY project with all the supplies needed available at your local hardware store. These boats Mr. Friant has built really work! And they last!! Most cardboard boat types last 30 minutes if your lucky. Twnety three years of repeated use is remarkable and a testimony to this boats design. I can’t wait to start mine! Nice job Mr. Friant!!!
