It’s not often one finds a book that is not only informative but well written and entertaining. Adria Vasil’s “Ecoholic” is like the Sex and the City column of the environment. It’s witty, smart and well researched and I just can’t get enough. So I was thrilled when the US book edition was released and wasn’t disappointed. Without coming off as preachy or condescending, Vasil shares her knowledge in a relaxed framework, complemented with quirky anecdotes, humorous tidbits and the down and dirty facts. But what I also love is that she makes it seem easy. She’s not out to conform us all to tree hugging, sun worshipers, but rather extends her hand, letting us set our own pace as we embrace change, one baby step at a time. Reading this book, I really get the impression that Vasil not only cares about the world she lives in, but how her readers can relate to everything she’s saying and trying to do. Living green never seemed so sexy. What next Vasil?

The text is well-written and can appeal to a wide audience. It’s simple enough to understand for those without a great deal of knowledge in sustainable design, yet interesting and usefull enough for the professional who’s more trained in sustainability. The text covers sustainable homes in a logical order, first stressing the foundation concepts like siting, orientation, passive solar, and building envelope efficiency, BEFORE moving on to less critical (but more popular) topics such as green materials.

I am a professor of Environmental Design and am currently building a passive solar, zero-energy home, and if I were to write a text that comprises the whole of the process and goals in sustainable home building, the format and breadth of topics would be similar to this book.

One negative of the book is the absence of color images to illustrate some points. The simple line drawings get the point across, but photos might have a better impact – especailly in sections discussing more advanced systems such as renewable energy systems or rainwater catchment systems.

The tissue is advertised on Amazon as having a minimum of 80% post consumer recycled (P.C.R.) content. The product I received, however, states that while the box is 85% P.C.R., the tissue itself is only 20% P.C.R. This is pretty lame, I must say.

Also, it doesn’t come in the cool box displayed online with the green tree, but some strange ‘cloudish’ design that looks like it is from the 1980’s or something.

If 7th Gen. has changed the product, they should take the time to make sure that the resellers advertise with the most up to date info – shame on them.

The facial tissue is probably not the thickest or softest product on the market but it is as soft and absorbent as most and excellent for everyday use.
